We’re looking for someone with plenty of enthusiasm and imagination who will be able to work with staff and students on a range of sustainability issues from carbon reduction and recycling, to biodiversity and transport. You’ll be supported by the Energy & Environment Manager and gain in-depth experience in the sustainability field.

Objective:
 
The objective of this placement is to develop the first stages of an Environmental Management System (EMS) ready for external certification. This will involve comprehensive environmental assessments, development of environmental indicators and initiating environmental awareness/participation activity. The latter will include co-ordinating a group of staff environmental champions, organising environmental activities for Freshers’ Fayre and ensuring that there are regular environmental communications across the university.

Outputs:
1. Environmental Management System (EMS) – Phase 1: Completion of Phase 1 of the Acorn EMS Implementation programme, ready for certification.
2. Staff Environmental Champions: Reduction in energy usage and increase in recycling rates through staff-orientated projects and campaigns.
3. Communications & Events: Delivery of environmental activities during First Week and Freshers’ Fayre, and ongoing university-wide environmental communications.

Essential Selection Criteria:

1. Knowledge of and commitment to environmental sustainability issues.
2. Ability to plan and manage projects successfully and to work independently and with initiative, prioritising own workload and meeting deadlines.
3. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
4. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing at all levels, including production and presentation of reports and promotional materials.
5. Enthusiasm and ability to motivate others into action.
6. Knowledge of accredited Environmental Management Systems (EMS), e.g. EcoCampus, ISO14001 or EMAS
7. Ability to use MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint to an advanced level for data entry, analysis and report presentation.

Desirable Selection Criteria:
1. Previous experience of environmental projects in either a voluntary or paid position
2. Experience of event planning, communications, marketing or similar.
3. Postgraduate degree in an environmental discipline.

Key Tasks:
1. Manage an agreed caseload of participants and meet set targets for work experience and sustained job entry
2. Support a group of staff environmental champions to implement projects on recycling, energy saving etc. Co-ordinate projects, arrange meetings and keep up momentum to encourage positive environmental behaviours amongst staff.
3. Write content for the ‘Green Thing’ website and evaluate other methods of communication at UEL e.g. publications and e-bulletins to ensure that environmental messages are regularly promoted through all channels.
4. Liaise with relevant stakeholders to plan and carry out environmental activities during First Week and Freshers’ Fayre.
