| Background: |
| Northamptonshire’s households produce more than 300,000 tonnes of waste each year. Raising public awareness of waste and encouraging waste prevention, reuse and recycling is essential if Northamptonshire is to manage waste sustainably in the future. Educating children about waste prevention and recycling is a high priority for the County Council. If we educate children to recycle in schools, then we may be able to change recycling behaviour at home and encourage adults to recycle as well. This in turn will increase recycling rates. We are seeking a highly motivated and organised person to join our Waste Education Team to encourage the children and staff in our 330 schools to recycle the waste they produce. Currently approx 90% are recycling, but our target is to get 95% recycling by 2010 which will be more difficult than it sounds because we now have to persuade the schools that so far have shown very little interest in recycling. Our recycling system has recently been audited – we wish to continue with improvements arising from this. We also wish to extend our improvements to other areas of waste management. | ||
Objective: |
| This post will be part of the Northamptonshire Waste Education Team and will sit with the Waste Minimisation section of the Waste Management Team. The successful candidate will coordinate, review and implement the current in-school recycling system which is part of the countywide Slim Your Bin at School scheme. www.slimyourbinatschool.co.uk which will involve, managing to Slim You Bin at School website and regular liaison with School teachers and staff, the 7 District and Borough councils in Northamptonshire, contractors and members of the public. In addition the role will include the coordination of other waste-management projects and assisting with raising waste awareness. | ||
Benefits To Graduate |
| The work will allow the graduate to gain relevant experience if they are keen to work within the waste sector, particularly in a local authority promoting waste prevention and recycling to the public. Promoting a change in behaviour in the public and through education in schools, in order to reduce waste, is a high priority. The graduate will also gain experience in partnership working, reporting and developing literature to raise awareness about the reduction and recycling of waste. Ongoing training and support will be provided by a team of experienced waste officers. | ||
Employment Potential and Options Post Project Work |
| There is substantial potential gained from working within a County Council Waste Management team, especially within the waste prevention/education field which is a high priority for most local authorities. Our previous graduate placements have gone onto secure permanent positions with other local authorities in England and Scotland, and one was offered a post within our team. | ||
