| Background: |
||
| South Cambridgeshire is a mostly rural area with a population of over 130,000 residents dispersed among 101 parishes. We are one of the top performing local authorities in the county, achieving a combined recycling and composting rate 54% in 2008/09. We operate an alternate weekly collection system with the collection of organic material (garden waste, kitchen waste and cardboard) and dry recyclables (paper, cans and glass) one week and the collection of non- recyclable/compostable waste the following. In 2004 South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) won the Award for Excellence for Best Local Authority Recycling Initiative. SCDC, as part of the RECAP partnership, was also awarded Beacon Status for Waste and Recycling in 2006. South Cambridgeshire continues to be a leading member in the RECAP partnership (a premier waste partnership).
