| Ethical & Environmental principles are core to NUS Services culture. These values underpin all of our work and have done since the Company’s inception. The Ethical and Environmental Department takes a leading role in the development and delivery of the ethical and environmental agenda within the students’ union movement. This comprises specific programmes designed to reduce the environmental impact of our member unions, their institutions and the wider community; the ethical and environmental screening of our suppliers and other organisations including constructive engagement; minimising the Company’s own environmental impact, ensuring we are a beacon of good practice; generating sustainable income streams for the Company and our member unions. The department is a small team of people with a broad range of projects to manage. | ||
Objective: |

| • To conduct qualitative face to face focus groups and teledepth interviews • To transcribe all focus groups and interviews • To conduct all first level analysis for the focus groups and interviews • To conduct semi-structured desk research into education for sustainable development and write up findings • To clean and analyse quantitative data collection and draft report for insight into student drinking habits | ||

| This is a 3-month fixed-term position from 16 August 2010 – 12 November 2010. Further work opportunities may arise within the team over the duration of the placement but timing and funding will influence the likelihood of any further opportunities for the graduate within the team. | ||
Outputs: |

| 1. Delivery of qualitative research through the recruitment of interlocking samples as focus groups to cover three schemes as part of the NUS’s Degrees Cooler project. | ||
| 2. Provide qualitative insights and suggestions | ||
| 3. Complete semi-structured desk research into education for sustainable development in order to inform a quantitative survey, reporting for a multi-stakeholder partnership as part of a two-stage research project. | ||
| 4. Quantitative Data analysis to inform a wider analysis plan | ||
| 5. Draft Report to highlight key findings from responsible drinking survey into take away messages as part of the draft report | ||

||
| 1. Degree, or appropriate level of experience in the ethical and environmental field. | ||
| 2. Experience of running social / academic research. | ||
| 3. Experience in writing / publishing academic papers or reports. | ||
| 4. An understanding of key social research techniques. | ||
| 5. Experience of working within diverse teams and ability to liaise with senior academic staff | ||
| 6. Ability to set priorities, balance workload and to manage several projects at the same time, with a keen attention to detail | ||
| 7. Strong qualitative and quantitative research, data management and analytical skills (e.g. SPSS) | ||
| 8. The desire to work within an agreed code of behaviour which reflects the Company beliefs in terms of entrepreneurial, democratic and ethically led behaviour and an awareness of diversity issues. | ||
| 9. Collegiate/team focused approach to work. | ||
| 10.IT literate, a detailed knowledge of Microsoft Office. | ||
Desirable Selection Criteria: |

| 1. Psychology / Sociology / Related background with a passion about ethical and environmental issues. | ||
| 2. Experience of running and transcribing focus groups and depth interviews | ||
| 3. Self motivation and the ability to work with minimum supervision. | ||
| 4. Experience of delivering successful environmental initiatives or projects | ||
| 5. Experience of keeping records and project administration | ||
Key Tasks: |
||
| 1. To organise recruitment of interlocking samples, room hire, catering and moderation of qualitative focus groups (to a topic guide) covering three schemes as part of the NUS’s Degrees Cooler project. | ||
| 2. To oversee recruitment and moderation of a sample for high level academic respondents for in-depth telephone interviews as part of the NUS’s Degrees Cooler project | ||
| 3. To transcribe the focus groups and overview each group, and to transcribe the in-depth telephone interviews, providing key take aways and suggestions, plus qualitative insight support to the wider Degrees Cooler team. | ||
| 4. To conduct semi-structured desk research into education for sustainable development in order to inform a quantitative survey | ||
| 5. To work systematically, logging literature searched, key conclusions and strengths and weaknesses of each source | ||
| 6. To write up desk research into a short report for a multi-stakeholder partnership as part of a two-stage research project. | ||
| 7. To structure raw data, create table specifications and construct tables from an existing dataset as part of social research into responsible drinking | ||
| 8. To conduct statistical analyses on tables to inform a wider analysis plan | ||
| 9. To populate a pre-structured report template with findings from responsible drinking survey, with key take away messages as part of the draft report | ||
| 10.To attend team and company meetings; other external stakeholder events; and other duties as may reasonably be required. | ||
