The Sustainable Colleges Project places volunteer European graduates in FE colleges in The East Midlands. The volunteers are recruited through the European Union’s “Youth in Action” program. After being given a comprehensive induction in Education for Sustainable Development, English culture and the English education system these Sustainable College Assistants (SCAs) are placed in two colleges each, half-time. The SCAs are line-managed jointly by StudentForce and a staff member of the colleges in which they work.
By carrying out a number of mini-projects in the colleges the SCAs aim to support already existing work for sustainability and to help develop new ideas and activities. The mini-projects undertaken are developed according to priorities or need expressed by college representatives. Mini-projects in the academic year 2007-08 included activities such as the development of sustainability policies, organisation of awareness-raising events and creation of student People and Planet groups.
